But Maffei, 38, also is said to covet a leadership role in Microsoft's own Internet product strategy. A Microsoft insider said Maffei was angling to head Microsoft's Consumer and Commerce Group, announced in a recent reorganization.

I agree that this veto of his move to RoadRunner seems odd. It sounds like Maffei is willing to give up his stock options to get the kind of role he's looking for, so Microsoft wouldn't seem to have much hold over him if he really does want to run a company. It seems like they risk losing him for good on less than friendly terms. That would make him yet another casualty of the internet division.
