Just to clarify a common misunderstanding about patents. Although they can be very useful to enforce licensing and generate additional revenues, this is not the only benefit to a patent. Having worked on patents myself, I can tell you that a strong reason to maintain a patent is to protect yourself from being sued by others. In other words, BIDS can continue to use its Dutch Auction format without worrying about infringing on someone else's patent and in turn being sued. Of course, depending on how thorough their patent claims are, it can also generate tremendous amounts of revenue by being licensed by a large auction house such as ONSL or UBID (and now AMZN, YHOO).
