WAIT: SuperGen/MGI Parallels
by: Minn_sea

WAIT;

I think the issues you bring up point up some interesting parallels between SuperGen and MGI
Pharam (MG114 product). The products 9NC and the Illuden-S have simular histories:

ILLUDEN-S is a polycyclic alkaloid discovered in England in the 60's and found to have
excellent cytotoxic attributes, but was lethally toxic to animals (including humans). A
pharmacutical chemist at MGI Pharma was able to prepare a derivative (hydroxilating at a
point on the polycyclic chain - rendering the alkaloid much less toxic. Without reducing much
the selective toxicity (or uptake) to cancer cells.

CAMPTOTHECIN is a polycyclic alkaloid discovered in China centuries ago, found also to
have excellent cytotoxic attributes, but was lethally toxic to animals (including humans). A
pharmacutical chemist at the Stehlin Cancer Institute was able to nitrate one of the positions on
the polycyclic chain - rendering the alkaloid much less toxic. Without reducing much the
selective toxicity to cancer cells. The Stehlin Institute licenses its products for sale through
SuperGen.

Differences: MGI, perhaps because of its past, is very conservative about publicity or making
claims without peer review support. SupraGens president (Dr. Rubenfeld) is less constrained
about publicity.
