Exactly right. Your new basis is then 0. I hope you don't see this as a problem. Because what is your choice? Never take the deduction? And besides I think you have to take the deduction for the year it becomes worthless. Arguably this is last year if it never does become worth something. So rather than eventually filing an amended return, it seems better to take the deduction now and having use of your tax savings now until the day it may ever be worth something. Isn't it really just a present value of your money issue?
