I want to clarify that I have nothing against Maffei. It sounds like he's a very smart guy and a very good negotiator who would do a great job in the Consumer division where part of the job will be merging new companies into the existing division.

What I would question is the timing of any announcement like that. If he's so good and if he made it clear before the reorganization that he wanted to run the division, then why did Gates and Ballmer have to be forced by RoadRunner into seeing it? The problem is that what could have been seen as a bold move last month when the reorganization was announced, now looks like a defensive move -- a way to keep a good employee who has forced their hands.
