I have also heard that rumor with respect to LAM vs. AMAT etchers. However, the bookings numbers from the last quarter _suggest_ that the rumor is not correct. Over the last two years or so, the quarterly sales for Lam have been consistent ca. 30% of the sales for Amat (range of 27-33%). In the last quarter, the orders for Lam were almost exactly 30% of the orders for Amat. While this suggests that Amat is not significantly increasing market share in etchers, the caveat is that both companies compete with other tools. Hence, these order numbers could also be obtained, for example, if Amat gained market share in etch while Lam gained market share in CVD and cluster tools.

There was also an interesting article by Carl Johnson on TechWeb. He was noting how every etch company is always claiming that they are gaining market share. Interestingly, he was stating that each of the companies was also probably correct in their statement because different companies etchers are better for different processes/layers. His article implied that the etch manufacturers would be more accurate to say that we gained market share in this particular etch application, but had our butts kicked in these other three applications.
