Well they ain't gonna add a NTSC/PAL encoder with software.
Seems the customer wants this integration and ESS has been shopping for their own NTSC/PAL encoder. They found one and now they are working feverishly to come out with a VCD chip that integrates it too.

This is the very same thing that Needham and H&Q says makes CUBE's CL680 too expensive to manufacture and too hard to shrink.

Wonder if ESS can get their foundry (TMSC) to manufacture a mixed signal device with a low process failure rate?
Probably, since Cube already has worked through the issues with them.

Somebody tell that Needham guy to pay attention...

Your question:What features can they (ESST) can add in firmware?
I don't know, possibly a different set than what Cube can add?
Look at it this way. The probability exists that ESS can add a feature that CUBE must add hardware for, but the reverse is also true.
It's equally possible that CUBE can add a feature that ESS will have to add hardware for. It depends on the feature and what hardware already exists in the chips to support (it if any).
