Rob, I can tell you with assurance that Intel understands the problem that it faces as it tries to move into the high-end server space.

What will Merced bring to the table? Probably the same old standardization strategy that made Intel ubiquitous on the desktop in the first place. How many companies pledged to make Alpha servers? How many companies pledged to make Sun servers? Compare that with the number of companies that will be making Merced servers, and I'm sure you'll get the idea.

Intel is doing exactly that with the Xeon platform. I'm sure Intel wants to apply the same winning strategy to a microprocessor technology that seeks to go beyond the limitations of the x86 architecture.

Of course, this is all for naught if Intel didn't understand that RAS is key. I am positive that Intel will be pushing the software and OS guys like Microsoft, Sun, and maybe even Red Hat Linux to provide as much of these RAS capabilities that we normally find in the RISC competition.

Now, going back to AMD, I wonder if anyone at AMD realizes this when they try and push the K7 onto servers. I really don't believe it's as easy as dropping a K7 into an Alpha motherboard.
