I'm in no position to argue the technical merits and I'm not so sure the technical merits matter so much. All of these details- chip rate, synchronous or asynchronous timing, etc.. can be used to differentiate, hamstring, and exclude, regardless of merit. I am afraid that now that QCOM has decided not to withold IPR, there's nothing holding them back. As I said before WCDMA is "theirs". Sure they'll take what they need, superior coding techniques for example, but they'll retain arbitrary differences where possible.

Somebody's got to ask these questions. If I'm wrong and there really is considerable harmonization between the modes, GREAT. I'm just asking what if? QCOM was at one time very concerned about the chiprate for example. Have those issues just gone away? Are we so busy discounting future royalties that this stuff is just irrelevant? It might be,I just don't know..
