I understand how depth of field works in a film based camera.
In a digital camera you are not "exposing" film to light, therefore there is no correlation between shutter speed and aperture size. If this is the case, how can you vary the focal depth ?
If I am shooting an object 5 feet away with a wide aperture and fast shutter speed I would get the object in focus and the background out of focus. If I closed the aperture and lengthened the shutter speed I would get both the foreground and background in focus. I don't know if there is a corresponding mechanism in the digital world. I know you can't do it with a video camera.

Sorry if this is silly, I'm from the completely manual 35mm SLR world.
