I heard a statement by Richard Riley (Education Secretary) given in response to the Colorado shooting. He claimed the message of the killings is clear – that parents need to keep firearms away from their children.

It is hard for me to remember when I did not have a firearm. As a child I owned several guns and did not once have to think of separating them from their ammo. I could simply get up, choose a handgun, rifle or shotgun, pack ammo and go wherever I wanted, depending upon what I wanted to do (hunt or target practice). At a very young age I knew how to handle the firearms. I found them interesting, but they were certainly not an obsession. I viewed them as tools to be used and respected. In all the time I have had guns it never once occurred to me to shoot anyone (dear me). When I was a child, we settled our disputes with words, and if words did not work we used fists. In the very rare instance where fists failed to do the job we picked up sticks and rocks; but generally fists got the thing done nicely. If sticks and rocks did not take care of the thing (and I cannot remember a time when they did not), it was time to call the police.

All my children have guns, and have had them since they were wee little things. They can break them down, clean them and shoot them well. No accidents ever, and when they hear of accidents they marvel that people can be so stupid.

The message of the shooting is clear indeed. America has a bunch of parents who are just plain incompetent, raising hordes of depraved blankstards who have neither honour nor respect for decency.
