Network Appliance Announces New Enterprise-Ready Data ONTAP Software; Recovery and Availability Solutions Deliver True Data Protection and Security April 26, 1999 09:05 AM
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 1999--Network Appliance, Inc. (NTAP), the industry leader in data access appliances, today announced SnapMirror(tm) and SnapRestore(tm), two major enterprise data management options to Data ONTAP(tm) Version 5.3, the company's market-proven operating system for Network Appliance(tm) "filers."
SnapMirror and SnapRestore allow enterprise, database and e-commerce customers to implement multi-terabyte data management systems for remote mirroring, enterprise backup, disaster recovery and data replication at 50% of the cost of today's competitive solutions. The company also announced SecureAdmin(tm), a security product for administrators to conduct encrypted sessions with the filer over the Internet or corporate Intranets.
Data ONTAP 5.3's flexible multi-protocol architecture enables simultaneous file sharing of UNIX(R), Windows NT(R) and HTTP data by leveraging SecureShare(tm), NetApp's unique technology which handles file locking and security.
Data ONTAP 5.3 also incorporates NetApp(R) Snapshot(tm) file system technology, which provides system administrators and end-users with near-instantaneous recovery of lost, deleted and corrupted files. With Snapshots, data can be viewed in its current state or as it was at selected instances in the past. Data ONTAP 5.3 allows up to 20 Snapshots, or online "freeze- frame image" copies of a file system at any given time, and can be used to deliver simple and environments.
Using Data ONTAP 5.3, customers can minimize downtime, eliminate unnecessary storage investments and time consuming backup windows associated with today's existing mirroring and backup solutions.
"The introduction of fast, data protection tools like SnapMirror and SnapRestore are critical to Network Appliance's strategy of extending filer performance for our customers," said Mike Marchi, director of enterprise marketing at Network Appliance. "Data ONTAP 5.3 has a distinct architecture that allows Network Appliance to deliver high performance storage networking systems that are reliable, easy to administer and based on today's industry standards."
SnapRestore, SnapMirror and SecureAdmin
SnapMirror and SnapRestore are based on Snapshot technology. SnapRestore is the industry's first data recovery tool that can revert a file system to a previous Snapshot, so system administrators can quickly revert a file system to a previous operating state - such as before a data corruption or data integrity issue occurred. SnapRestore provides a new industry standard for data protection by reducing the average time it takes to recover from application data corruption instances from hours to minutes.
SnapMirror is a data replication tool designed to enhance data availability and promote business continuance, for applications such as disaster recovery. It delivers a fast, flexible enterprise solution for implementing remote mirroring of file systems over local or wide area networks at the block level. SnapMirror allows customers to mix and match NetApp filers to achieve the best mirroring price/performance with their systems, including the use of a single filer to backup multiple filers.
SecureAdmin implements the SSH 1.x (Secure Shell) protocol in DataOntap 5.3. SecureAdmin uses licensed RSA(R) public key encryption technology to provide host authentication and administrative session encryption for protecting login IDs, passwords and command results from network snooping.
Availability and Pricing
Data ONTAP 5.3 software is immediately available from Network Appliance and is included with every shipped NetApp filer and NetCache(tm) system. SnapMirror and SnapRestore are separately licensed software products. SnapRestore ranges in price from $2,500 to $8,000, based on system configuration. SnapMirror ranges in price from $10,000 to $50,000, based on system configuration. Pricing for SecureAdmin is $250 per filer. |
