Why can't you be an intellectual snob about modern culture?

I guess that for me, the word "culture" (whether ancient, modern, medieval, or whatever), by itself, implies "High Culture". In order to talk about "popular culture", however, one must first read popular magazines, watch popular movies & TV shows, etc. That would just make me harrumph. Too painful.

P.S. I do follow comic strips, however. It's the first thing I look at in a daily newspaper (except for The New York Times, which remains firm and unflinching in its intellectual snobbery). I really regret the passing of "Calvin" and "Outland" -- not to speak of "Pogo". I can remember when Harvard students rioted on behalf of Pogo's presidential candidacy...<sigh>
