Hong Kong ISP to offer hosting clients payment gateway

Hong Kong Internet service provider and Web hosting company Asia Internet will offer clients an online payment system so that they can accept credit card orders through the Internet.

The new facility is the result of an agreement with US-based First Ecom.com Inc, which provides online credit card transaction processing services for merchants outside of North America.

Asia Internet will be able to process Web hosting customers' online credit sales through the First Ecom.com processing systems, as well as being able to offer dial-up customers a way of paying their monthly ISP bills online.

First Ecom.com and Asia Internet will share revenues earned through a commission on Web credit card sales.

The payment gateway is a solution to the problem of Hong Kong banks not providing Internet merchants with credit card authorization facilities.

"For a long time now we have been asked by our Web hosting clients to commerce enable their Web sites," said Mike Mahboobani, president of Asia Internet. "Without an online processing system, this has simply not been possible, as the banks do not issue Internet merchant IDs."

The payment systems are expected to be available by the end of June 1999.
