Hi everyone,
I've thought of little else but this since it happened last Tuesday and now I have to do some venting.
Why do things have to be this way? I think of those shooters and wonder how horrible their lives must have been for them to do those things. What makes kids do these things? Of course there is no defense for something like this. But children can be so cruel at times, especially when left unchecked by adults. Was this the case here? Again, no excuse but kids going to school should not have to be subject to humilation and cruelty.
But, how can anyone believe the school "knew nothing" about problems between these two groups. NO WAY!!!! Also, even now a parentof a classmate of one of the shooters has come forward saying that he copied pages of the one boy's web site, mailed it to the local police and then actually called back on SEVERAL occasions regarding this and nothing happened. Nothing until last Tuesday. Yet the police claim to have "known nothing" about these boys and any problems they may have had (other than the car incident).
Schools should not allow this so-called "self-expression" among students. Schools are for EDUCATION -- period! There should be more (a LOT more!) discpline.
Also, children should be taught RESPECT for others and to be TOLERANT of others. These two things are terribly lacking in today's society. Unfortunately it's always about "me", "me", "me"!
Forget about student rights. I'm not saying spanking, hitting, etc. That's not necessary. There has to be some code of conduct. And start by eliminate all the gang clothing that's allowed.
And, it's not just the teachers. How many parents believe their teenagers are out of control? What's to be done about it? But talk to these parent and you'll hear them admit that their kids still are allowed to drive their cars, watch the tv, play games, stay on the phone for hours.... WHERE IS THE DISCIPLINE????? These parents don't control these kids, the kids are controlling their parents!
I don't come into contact with many teenagers however, the other evening I did get a chance to talk to one. This young girl (8th grader) told me she was very scared to go back to her school this week (central ny). The same school my kids went to a few years ago.
She also told me there were many kids in her school who she was afraid of and perhaps capable of doing something similar to the Colorado incident.
Her mother then told me she hadn't been able to talk to her daughter about it. Yet, a stranger (me), had her talking about it in just moments.
PARENTS -- PLEASE TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN!!! Find out what's happening in their schools.
It's going to happen again. I don't want it to, I've been devasted by all this, but God help us, it's not over. (please let me be wrong about this!)
