hi pw,
i've mentioned that i just installed norton systemworks2.0. part of that process was to create 'rescue disks'. the norton user guide instructs us to then test these boot disks to make sure that they work. this is done by shutting down windows, turning off the power, then inserting the floppy disk in the A: drive and restarting. with norton utilities... if the message "if you are testing your basic rescue disk set, you have succeeded" appears on the screen, the boot disk works properly. (it is then a good idea to write-protect the disk by sliding open the plastic tab on the back of the disk.)
my question is, do you know the procedure for testing bootable floppies in machines that do not have the norton software interface? is it the same maybe?
i also had to create antivirus rescue disks. to test them, i shut down, inserted the disk in A: drive and restarted the computer. after the pc starts, at the A:\ prompt, i typed TEST and pressed enter. a screen message then reports whether the boot disk works or not.
the majority of people probably don't have a norton utility installed. so they should look into testing their boot disks. or, if they have a utility suite from another company, they should check with that manufacturer to determine what procedure is required to test boot disks.
:)
