My younger son loves the Rach 4. Does he know anything about Rachmaninoff? Or the period? Or the style? No, he just fell in love with it, to the basic motif, tracing it through the movement, playing along with one finger on the piano. He has a visceral response to Rach.'s genius. He did the same thing with the Mozart Requiem, listening to it for hours every day. He begged for his own opera ticket this year.

To me this type of appreciation is a lot more passionate and real than all the intellectual BS people spout to prove somehow they are "cultured" and KNOW music. Dallas is full of the pseudointellectualism that can be purchased with new money. TIckets to the opera to be seen (and then they sneak out after an act), books with uncut pages in expensive libraries..
