There is more of a correlation to cramming people together and having them kill each other. Let's face it, people are annoying (not just the little people either) of course you (whoever you are, reading this and thinking about yourself) aren't annoying - just everyone else. And the further away people are the less annoying they seem. So when you have people spread out, lots of land, no feeling of being squashed in by other annoying people, of course you don't have as many people going berzerk. Highschool can be pretty claustrophobic. A small suburb can seem like a prison when you are young and intelligent and life seems to be boring and small and getting smaller. One's own death, and especially taking some other people with you in death, can seem like a brilliant and heroic thing to do I suspect.
