IMO, this is completely the wrong way to see it.

Shorting stocks takes a fair amount of research and understanding. It's often about patience, living with pressure from longs who are hyping stocks despite obvious (or not so obvious flaws), and realizing that your pick may take longer to explode than you thought.

OTOH, shorts who do their homework often understand companies better than the longs. And there is a tremendous satisfaction in seeing you were right (especially if the company collapses, shareholders sue, and management goes to jail, and you knew it was going to happen all along).

In the end though, it's not about fun. It's about making money. Treat it as a casino if you wish, and you'll probably have the same luck as a typical casino gambler. Treat it as a serious business and you'll learn a lot.

Not surprisingly, good shorts are often also good longs. The same kind of research which leads to discovering major unrecognized flaws can lead one to recognizing major unrecognized potential...
