They would sneer at my books and throw them out--- they all come from library sales and the half-price book store and are all extremely unattractive.

Just the way I like them. Looking like they exist for a purpose other than decoration.

And yes, some people actually do that -- it is difficult for some people to admit there is anything they have not read or delved into, particularly when they are expected to act intelligible about them, or when they are on the make. I would have to wonder at the number of copies of Anna Karenina on such people's shelves versus the number of people that have actually read it.
