PHILIPS WIN UPC SET-TOP DEAL

Philips is to be the mains head-end systems and settop box provider for UPC's digital cable services. The settops will be the first to use Microsoft Windows CE software. Microsoft is a significant UPC shareholder. UPC plans to launch digital services in five European countries –Austria, Belgium, Norway, France and the Netherlands - by mid 2000. In addition to pay-TV UPC will offer Internet services, e-mail, e-commerce and other applications directly to the TV set. The settop will deploy a DOCSIS MCNS high-speed cable modem for the interactive services.
