Tim,

I agree with your scenario that COMS value could piggyback on a rise in the suitor's value if the buyout were perceived to be accretive. However, I strongly disagree with LU as the buyer. There is absolutely no way they would be allowed to keep Ascend's remote access business and keep the Total Control platform. Now, there are plenty of companies that would live to buy 3Com's remote access business, but that would leave only the still-lucrative systems business, commodity client side business, and Palm. I doubt that will add fuel to Lucent's fire.
