For one thing,
point-to-point and even hub-based fibre channel systems are passe. While
fast, these SANs offer limited flexibility and scalability.

SANs R US....
seems AOL, Wam!net, ISPs of any size could go into this biz....go FC!

Startup To Offer Outsourced Storage
Martin J. Garvey

Storage Networks Inc. is offering to take the hassle out of storage. The
startup is entering the outsourcing market this week with an offer to handle
storage infrastructure for businesses.

Outsourcing legacy systems isn't a new idea, but Storage Networks will use
high-speed Fibre Channel storage area networks to provide data storage to
customers on an as-needed basis. Businesses that experience spikes in data
capacity requirements or in hits on their Web site won't have to carry the
expense of an infrastructure that's underutilized most of the time.

Storage Networks is building its networks and connections around the country
while partners such as EMC Corp. provide the storage components. One
partner and customer, PKS Information Services, a $120 million systems
integrator in Omaha, Neb., expects the partnership to be beneficial. "Data in
systems continues to grow exponentially," says Jimmy Byrd, CEO of PKS.
"People either can't afford the capital cost of the infrastructure, or can't
manage all the data."
