shoot1st,
1. I hope you realize I'm not trying to hassle you. I'm just pointing out that emphasizing a "good guys/bad guys" scenario, whether true or not, only polarizes the situation. Politically, the best way to approach the matter is to reinforce the good things Wayne offers to the community, and how his continued presence would be a boon to SI. IMO only, the perception of a "good guys"/"bad guys" scenario is more exaggerated than reality.
2. Wayne's insight and "market smarts" are commendable—even better than commendable; the guy should get a medal. However, the situation he caused has seriously disrupted life for people who don't even know what this situation is all about. Look at these posts, from people who aren't even involved, who are under the illusion that Wayne posted all their personal info (you and I know it's simply a mirror link that only shows a person's own info to themselves, but they don't necessarily know that):

So, it's a situation where a guy who really is an asset to SI—who normally really helps people out 99.99% of the time, made a move that has upset some folks. SI is understandably pissed because they have to deal with a ton of angry inquiries—a huge burden on a system with tens of thousands of users, to be fielded by a staff of what—four or five people?
Don't get me wrong—I'm all for Wayne. But he's had much better ideas than this one. <VBG> So, instead of polarizing people about a "good guy/bad guy" conspiracy, the best method is to re-establish Wayne's good side, and remind people that, on the whole, Wayne makes extremely valuable contributions here. This little incident is just one moment in time that we will get over shortly. Under the circumstances, I think Wayne needs to get a note over to Admin right away (a nice one), and we can all help positively, too (I already have, and will continue to do so). But pouring gas on the fire won't put it out. |
