Solaris supports a two-tier thread model that allows a kernel thread to move to any available processor. Threads have cache affinity and therefore tend to run on the processor they were started on.

I guess my point is that to take advantage of these big boxes you need to re-architect your application at some point anyways. Therefore scalability beyond an 8-CPU framework is difficult to do in a platform independant manner.
