The U.S. has the popularity factor in it's favour over the 3rd Reich

Popular with who, and how?

Popular with refugees as a destination, certainly. The U.S. is still seen as the land of opportunity. Just as players will battle to join a winning team, so people from around the world battle to come here. I don't know whether people were trying to get into Germany in the 30s, but with the depression there was a lot of dislocation.

Popular with ourselves, certainly. But is the US more popular with its citizens than the 3rd Reich was with Germans? Doubtful. Don't forget that Hitler was popularly elected, and that tens to hundreds of thousands of people turned out for his rallies. When was the last time we saw that kind of crowd out for a rally by a political party in this country? (Scary thought: what would Hitler have done if he had had the power of Television behind him?)

Popular with the world? Certainly the US is more feared. But more popular than Germany was in the 30s? I just don't know.
