It's pretty simple to avoid infection. Never open mail from someone you do not know! Never download software from the internet! Never copy anything from diskette to your hardrive, and never reboot your system with a diskette in the drive bay! Only use software from reputable vendors from CD. If you do this, it is virtually impossible to become infected.
Now, unless you are afraid someone will hack your machine while you are dialed into through your ISP, there is little to be concerned about from cyberterrorism. If you're worried about being hacked, get some firewall software. But, this is rather extreme...then again we are talking about extreme circumstances.
I don't even run virus scanners anymore, because it would be virtually impossible to get infected, following the guidelines set above.
Lastly, always backup vital data, it's far more valuable than your machine!
