I agree, MSFT wouldn't seem to gain enough to make the billions it would cost worthwhile. But it could still play the spoiler. If AOL decided to join Comcast in a counter-counter-offer for UMG, they might well be forced to buy out Microsoft's $1-billion interest in Comcast, and it would probably cost them more than that now. There's nothing stopping AOL from making its own independent bid for UMG, however (except the billions of dollars).
