Bob,

ATR is smoother than a simple daily range average since it looks at two bars at a time. What I had in mind in my comments were various methods of spitting out this same type of info, including true range.

I always fall back on pure pattern reading to measure volatility for my own trading, stealing Crabel/Raschke's ideas on narrow range bars.
