I can't even fathom the butterfly-beats-his-wings implications of these weapons of war finding their way into a certain sherry-laden Kiwi's hands:

New Zealand may buy 28 U.S. warplanes -Pentagon
WASHINGTON, April 26 (Reuters) - New Zealand is considering the purchase of 28 older model U.S. F-16 jet fighters with new engines for $397 million, the Pentagon said on Monday.

Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT - news), which builds the F-16, would upgrade the planes which would be taken from U.S. military stocks. The package would include 28 engines built by the Pratt and Whitney division of United Technologies Corp. (UTX - news).

Sale of the jets is another sign that defense ties are warming between the two countries after tensions over New Zealand's refusal to allow nuclear-powered U.S. warships to dock at its ports.

That ban was lifted after the United States removed tactical nuclear weapons from its warships.

''This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country which has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress in the southwestern Pacific region,'' the Pentagon said.

The announcement said the fighters would be used to increase New Zealand's small fighter inventory and eventually replace its aging fleet of older A-4 aircraft as well as improve inter-operability with U.S. forces.
