Coherent Announces Industry's First Remote Management System for
Echo Cancellers

Business Wire - March 03, 1997 07:02

LEESBURG, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 3, 1997--Coherent Communications Systems Corporation (NASDAQ:
CCSC) announced today the launch of its exciting new network management system at CTIA's Wireless 97 show, in San
Francisco, California. The Coherent Monitoring, Observation, and Response system, or c/mor, makes possible remote
monitoring and configuration of Coherent echo cancellers located throughout a customer's network. In an echo canceller
industry first, c/mor maintains configuration files, reports and logs alarms, and offers remote control of multiple echo
canceller sites simultaneously.

The c/mor product is an exciting and important breakthrough for the telecommunications industry. Echo canceller
management and configuration typically requires the time, travel, expertise and availability of a few trained specialists within
a company. Remote alarm monitoring only existed as general device alarms hard-wired through the CO or MTSO switching
equipment. Typically, only a few network operations personnel have the in-depth technical knowledge required to configure
and maintain echo cancellers. Issues have had to be handled by these trouble-shooters either in person, or through cryptic
one-at-a-time interfaces. Coherent's new c/mor system allows this expertise to be virtually distributed across a network from
a centralized workstation. Echo cancellers in remote locations - where configuration set up and maintenance would have
previously been either slow or impractical - are now as easily controlled and monitored as those in the network management
center.

"Our focus is to provide the most complete echo canceller solutions in the industry." said David Powell, President of
Coherent. "We have proven our technological superiority repeatedly in various independent lab tests and customer
evaluations. Our broad product line, including Coherent's additional product announcement on our new Wireless Echo
Canceller, prove we have the best portfolio of canceller software features and ancillary products as well. And, as of today,
those carriers who insist on having the best transmission quality (via our EC-6000 series cancellers) can support it with a real
multi-device remote management system."

The c/mor system allows the echo canceller configurations to be viewed in a full-screen, Windows-based display. Different
configurations can be saved to, and loaded from the workstations's disk memory - allowing standard configuration libraries
to be maintained and backed-up. Use of the disk-based configurations greatly reduces the potential for error, while saving
valuable time for key engineers. c/mor decreases travel time, lowers level of training support required, offers cost-effective
remote installation support, reduces repair time, and results in reduced down-time. The carrier is rewarded with improved
network quality, customer satisfaction, operations cost savings, increased revenue, and the ability to support echo canceller
location independence.

c/mor also includes a robust menu of customization and tracking features which provides operations personnel with easy to
use on-line guidance. Alarm notification is similarly easy to use and can be customized for non-technical support. Rack and
shelf addresses can be custom named to be consistent with internal nomenclature. Network operators can custom name the
four levels of alarms, (re)assign any alarm types to any of these levels, and add their own instructions to alarm notices. The
entire package was designed to provide quick to learn, easy to use, friendly on-line help.
