Directory-Centric Intelligence in a Server-Centric World....
>>IMHO this takes 3 steps -
1) make the best directory product possible. a) make it scalable, reliable, secure. b) make it work on every server platform out there. 2) make sure development costs for 3rd parties is low. a) use popular development methods and tools b) create "library" software which eases development for NDS. 3) GET THE MESSAGE OUT!>>
Peter:
I don't think the world is ready to understand "Directory-Centric". We'll all be in the next version of One Flew Over the Cookoos Nest - which I am writing myself into with each passing day.....if I continue keeping these hours.
I'd rather suggest emphasizing an "Intelligent Object" approach to this problem of cross platform access. I'm envisioning NDS-supported apps that will run and manage a growing base of standardized object-oriented automated routines which work for us, instead of vis versa.
Steps #2 and 3 are critical.
It's not quite clear what ground Novell wants to build on going forward.
My advice: make the retail version of NDS ubiqitious.
Give away to EVERYONE all the basic API's, tools and class libraries necessary to usher in a viral growth process that gives clear reasons AND incentives for INDIVIDUALS, not the leading software developers, to plant their OWN NDS roots, grow their OWN NDS security/relational service/access trees on which they and a growing legion of others will coalece around NDS-centric communities that begin to align for specific cause-effect e-commerce reasons.
We are in the early stages of the "era of the individual."
Intelligent, creative individuals, not companies, who have an idea which can be leveraged into community-building enterprises that attract mind/marketshare for specific verticals is where I think the future is heading as far as NDS is concerned.
Sure, NDS will be deployed by all the major companies. Let's face it. They HAVE to get on this new train. It's left the station. Companies that embrace directory technologies will be leading this "behind the bleeding NT" edge of this revolution - plowing their competitors away with more functional methods of reaching end users to deliver individually-oriented tailored service and support that retains and grows their core and new business initiatives.
I see developers aligning themselves with these emerging "communities" - away from the strict control of companies. A individual's worth will be measured more by the power, respect and leverage he/she has earned from building mindshare inside specific verticals. The ability of ONE individual to reach out and leverage the power of many to develop future colaborative apps will be at the core of this trend.
Hey, y'all1 Look what I just came up with. What'd ya think? Comments, questions? Assimilate, integrate, beta, test, go live with new versions. Gain core critical development mass. Show the specs on users, partners, potential, etc. and use the Internet go get initial angel funding for the next round.
Once you're mission critical, its off through VC-land and the races.
