Jefferies & Company Leverages Enterworks' Virtual DB Technology to Win Application Development Trends Innovator Award

ASHBURN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 1999--

Leading Institutional Brokerage Firm Honored for Bringing Competitive

Advantage and Innovation to Its Data Warehousing Application

Enterworks(SM) Inc., the leading provider of software for enabling the virtual enterprise, today announced that its customer, Jefferies & Company, has been honored with Application Development Trends' Innovator Award. Jefferies, highlighted as the winner in the Data Warehousing category, gained its recognition for using innovation and technology savvy to build an application that would provide the company with a significant competitive advantage. This application supported by Enterworks' leading data integration solution, Virtual DB(R), enabled Jefferies to provide access to mission-critical financial information.

The fifth annual Innovator Awards recognizes and profiles winners in the following seven development categories: Client/Server Development, Internet Development, Object-Oriented Development, Software Engineering, Existing Systems Redevelopment, Middleware and Data Warehousing. Organizations were evaluated by editors at Application Development Trends as well as by a team of consultants from Keane Inc., a Boston-based integration and consulting firm. Winners were chosen based on their innovative work and ability to create competitive IS applications for their customers.

"The ADT Innovator Award highlights companies that take risks by implementing innovative strategies and creating leading-edge technologies to benefit their customers," said Mike Bucken, editor-in-chief of Application Development Trends. "Jefferies & Company's data warehousing implementation is a good example of how organizations apply technology to increase their bottom-line."

As an institutional brokerage firm and investment bank, Jefferies has a continuous need to display trade, commission and reference data for ad hoc queries and analysis by sales and executive staff. In an ongoing effort to improve the company's means for information dissemination, Jefferies looked to Enterworks and its Virtual DB data integration solution. With Virtual DB, Jefferies enhanced its ability to access and view customer account information and provide timely and accurate reports to various users, regardless of their location.

With the implementation of Virtual DB(R), Jefferies could now easily access information from nine disparate data sources, thus reducing their reliance on mainframe developers to produce reports. It also enabled Jefferies to view important customer and financial information via a Web browser.

"Jefferies is very excited to have been recognized for our innovation in developing an application that delivers critical data in an intuitive, easy and accurate fashion," said Janelle Briggs, vice president of the technology division. "As a leading investment brokerage firm, we saw the need to adapt our underlying infrastructure to better serve our global customers' information requirements. Virtual DB(R) allowed us to meet our challenging goals and create a means for efficient information dissemination, increasing our cost savings and overall employee productivity."

Jefferies & Company's receipt of an ADT Innovator Award was largely based on the strength of Enterworks' Virtual DB(R) data integration solution. Virtual DB(R) provides companies with the quickest solution for integrating, managing and distributing information throughout the enterprise. The product can access more than 70 different data sources and create unified business views through familiar Web browsers. Its unique, object-oriented MetaCatalog maps enterprise data to semantically meaningful terms for rapidly prototyping, building and modifying business views without impacting existing systems.

"Enterworks is honored that its Virtual DB(R) solution has been recognized for its instrumental role in helping Jefferies to evolve their business," said Robert Lewis, president of Enterworks. "This is a testament to Enterworks' strength in adapting to our customer's needs by providing a data integration solution that integrates, manages and distributes mission-critical information across the enterprise."
