cmg, think a moment. How does one reverse engineer an ASIC? A big (really big like an electron microscope) magnifying glass? What do you really learn that way? P.S. we are at $9. Other than key principles and techniques, the speed that the technology is changing, and being embedded into chips is also a major form of protection. By the time you get a patent, the technology can be leapfrogged. Speed to market with new technology is VERY important, and this is where the vertical integration comes in.
