Hi Bob. I can give you my take on it though I have not confirmed this with the company. The H&FC Letter did in fact talk about Matsushita launching a small, portable 250 watt PEM generator this fall. They expect to target niche markets such as construction who they believe will be willing to pay the initial high price of $8,000 US. They will consider exporting it if it takes off in Japan. This program may fall into what Ballard considers the "prototype or demonstration" market they discuss in the annual report as it is not yet mass market ready. I would also take the "by 2002" date with a grain of salt given the incredible progress they have made in the portable power products. I suspect the key is reducing costs at this point which is dependent on projected market potential, which is itself dependent on ensuring they have the right product for the markets. Hence the demonstration projects.

Since Ballard only sells the fuel cell stack to the OEM's and doesn't have to develop and market the end product, they are inevitably dependent on the OEM's timeframe for getting the product on the market and have no control on the timing for when the OEM will launch. I expect we will see the company has been conservative in its comments in the annual report.

Regards
