John,

CL680 is a good chip with some problems. The biggest problem is the production yield of CL680 since it integrates the NTSC/PAL video encoder function onto the same logic die. Since ESST prides itself in its mixed IC product that it shipped for years on the audio market, ESST knows the possible tasks lie ahead for such an approach. The associated test complexity also will increase its manufacturing cost. For these two reasons, ESS chooses to not integrate them on the sam die. When CL680 matures on its learning curve, it will be a good chip.

I think to advertise the advanced audio features of CL680 on the whole is unwise.

Everyone knows that audio know-how is the forte of ESST. In fact, the wide sound and vocal fade is in the VCD chip that ESST ships now and with more programmable features that you or I do not even know. I was told all the customers who got a preview of the new ESS chip will have to keep it quiet for a while.

However, I believe Cube has a lead for the time being on DVD chip over ESST. I worry that both Cube and ESST have to fight with the Japanese chip DVD suppliers in the long run.

Steve
