Stonehenge is cool, but too many tourists.

Agreed. But I saw it once in moonlight. After giving a concert near Southampton some friends and I weren't tired so we decided to go see Stonehenge. We got there about 2 in the morning, half-moon, wind, very ghostly. We climbed over the fence (possible then, I think they have beefed up security since then) and wandered around in the ghostly moonlight more than half-expecting pagan forms to emerge from behind the stones. It gave me a real sense of the awe and mystery of the place I've never lost. Definitely spooky.

I would agree on avoiding most of the most popular monuments -- kids don't care about the history part anyhow, and there are some out of the way half-ruined castles and old homes open to the public which are every bit as good as the better known ones, and with the lack of crowds you get much more personalized tours. In one home we were the only visitors on a rainy afternoon and we were asked to have a cuppa with the family. Rare, but nifty.
