They *do* want breadth of pipeline. It's the small companies that muck things up.

I'd gladly take very little premium for my SIBI shares, given that the efforts were rolled into a thriving, well-managed larger company. That is, I'd sacrifice [potential] year 2000 bucks for year 2005 bucks, if I thought that I'd be a part of something that could be a sustained monster.

SIBI probably isn't the best example to use, but it's not a bad one.
