The tragedy at Littleton, Colorado has uncovered much
that we as a society would prefer not to see. The focus
of blame shifts with each new revelation. Certainly it is
someone else's fault. If only there were a law. We point
and we point, but our aim is so poor. Isn't this a systemic
problem? These young people adopted an ethos that is very
strange to most of us. A self centered nihilist philosophy,
a vacuum filling a vacuum. Is this the best that we have to
offer? I feel great anguish for the victims of this tragedy
but I also feel anguish for the young men who perpetrated it.
Products of families who thought that they had given them
everything but left them empty, of teachers who counted
their bodies but didn't bother to reach their minds.
Products of a society that saw them but failed to see their
needs. This is not necessarily the result of a society that
is rotten to the core, rather of a core that has drifted too far
in the direction of self-absorption and permissiveness.
Think in terms of bell curves; as we drift we have created
a fringe who have marginalized themselves, people who
"don't care" because the people they interact with most
closely "don't care". I have a fear that our world is full ot
these little ticking time bombs and that instead of reaching
out to find the pain and to fill the emptiness that we will
instead push them away, point our fingers at others as
being responsible and just pass another law.
