John, what's wrong is that Dell's number's are actually much better than portrayed. ROIC is actually well over 150%. I haven't gotten to the nitty-gritty level, but I'll bet that a lot of it has to do with accounting issues like mergers and acquisitions (which AOL does quite a bit of and Dell doesn't), and share buybacks which Dell does and AOL doesn't. Suffice to say that in terms of every metric I can find save topline growth, DELL looks considerably stronger. One point regarding AOL: one of the major drivers is assumed to be exponentially growing advertising revenue. So far there is no evidence of that happening. My guess is that the major advertising revenues will continue to come from e-tailers -- not from the traditional retail stores. That leads me to question the premise of exponential advertising growth. AOL is a fine company, but I can't help but think that people are taking an unrealistic view of its prospects.

General Warning: Yahoo!'s numbers (along with Market Guide) are frequently wrong because they are generated by computer, and adjustments aren't made to reflect the kinds of issues I raised. You are better off going to the 10-Qs and 10-Ks and "rolling your own".
