I think it's pretty clear from his statement that he was comparing IF_Merced to the Alpha that will exist when IF_Merced finally arrives. If he weren't, then you'd be making a stink about the performance side of his assertion--because surely the IF_Merced that arrives wouldn't be two years behind a .35u Alpha in performance, would it? "I am very excited about IA64. It should be only about 2 years behind Alpha in performance, and the die sizes will be only about 4X the size of Alpha."
