Herc-

You clearly don't understand satellite technology. That's ok, you've been asking reasonable questions. But you have to listen to the answers- an international service needs international regulatory aproval. There are lots of sats up there and they all have to work together. This means there are limits on the frequencies and therefor bandwidth that can be used. Putting a tower up in a city means getting that cities and the FCC's approval. Putting a satellite up means a lot more. Furthermore, the distance between the satellite and the customer is much more than between a customer and a cell tower. This combined with the limited transmission power you can get on a battery powered phone puts limitations in what you can do.

Iridium forsaw global demand for relaible phones and has put a system into place to provide that. Unfortunately, it looks that like the newton, while the product works as advertised and is quite useful, ignorance on the part of the press is leading to misreports.

For instance, James Cramer is just manipulating the stock. That story never happened in St. Martin. This guy has the credibility of Rush Limbaugh.
