Young, RE: is the Epson Zip an IDE (parallel interface) or does it have an
SCSI interface?

You may be confused here. There are three interfaces supported by Zip drives. There is a SCSI Zip (both internal and external), an IDE Zip (internal only), and the parallel interface Zip (external only).

The SCSI Zip and IDE Zip should be basically equivalent in performance. The parallel Zip drive is slower.

Epson actually makes Iomega branded purple Zip drives, sold by Iomega as Iomega drives. I don't think that Epson's beige version is any different except for its color.

Iomega must make more on the drives that they build themselves, but they can't build enough so they signed up Epson to help. Might as well share the wealth and establish the drive as the standard, instead of letting a competitor dominate the market.
