Compaq Armada Notebook PCs Aim for Mount Everest

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 1999--Compaq Computer
Corporation (NYSE:CPQ - news) today announced today that three Compaq Armada 7400 Series
notebook personal computers are on their way to Mount Everest as part of the Everest Extreme
Expedition (E399), a unique team of health-science experts studying the challenges of humans in
extreme and remote environments. The E399 team departed for Nepal on April 21st.

This six-week expedition to the world's highest mountain is organized by the Yale/NASA Commercial
Space Center for Medical Informatics and Technology Applications, The Explorers Club and Millennium
Healthcare Solutions, Inc. with participation by the National Institutes of Health. E399's mission is to
push the limits of equipment and technology that will accompany astronauts to the International Space
Station, as well as to explore approaches to healthcare delivery here on Earth. The climbing team will
be equipped with the latest medical technologies and will have access to medical specialists halfway
around the globe.

Supported by some of the most advanced medical and communications technology ever deployed,
including three Compaq Armada 7400 models, the 15-member E399 team will operate at altitudes of
17,500 ft. and higher. Support facilities at Yale University will reinforce the Everest site with full
communications, management, and analysis in real-time. The Armada 7400 units will be used for a
variety of duties including data compilation, IP video conferencing, e-mail and other day-to-day tasks.

''In order to prepare for the expedition, we tested three Armada 7400 notebook PCs in a U.S. Army
environmental chamber up to 18,000 feet (equal to the base camp of Mount Everest) and down to -30F;
all three Armadas all came through without a hiccup,'' said Brett Harnett, Webmaster of E399.
Information about the E399 expedition can be found at www.everestextreme99.org.

The Armada 7400 Series offers desktop-equivalent portable PC performance in a durable
magnesium-alloy case, and the latest high performance features in a lightweight, thin design. For more
