The broker may think it's speculative, but the other side of the coin is that brokers don't really know that much about whether a stock is good, bad, safe, or speculative. Brokers are experts in executing transactions (theoretically anyway). They don't have time to sit down and do research on stocks. That's what their research departments do, and it is very likely their biggest customers - institutional accounts, etc. - will get that information before you receive it. One of the great things about SI is that there are really a lot of people who, because of their own jobs (usually not stock market related) may know a lot more about certain stocks than brokers or brokerage firms will ever know. I do my own investment research, aimed at individuals who typically invest less than $40,000 a year. By concentrating on smaller cap issues, I can often select stocks months ahead of the firms that serve larger accounts. Art
