I think Loomis had a lot to do with this decision.

Coherent Inc today announced that its Board
of Directors elected Henry E. Gauthier as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company,
replacing James L. Hobart, one of Coherent's founders, who resigned earlier this month. Mr.
Gauthier spent twenty-four years working for Coherent, the last thirteen as President prior to his
retirement in 1996. He has also served as a director since 1983.

Bernard Couillaud, Coherent's President and Chief Executive Officer said, "Hank's knowledge of
and experience in the laser industry make him an excellent choice for Chairman. Having worked with
Hank over the last fourteen years, I know that we share the commitment to profitable growth
through building a truly global company."
