my opinion on the option strangle:
Linda- isn't what you just described a spread rather than a strangle?

i think they sold puts and sold the calls collecting about 2 transaction x 6000 contracts each x100 sh/contrat x %5/8
or $750k premium betting that the stock would close between 17.5 and 20 in June. If stock is above $20, he needs to buy to cover keepin the PUT premiums and visa versa.

PS - i don't think ibm would be interested in vlsi. their microelectronics division is mostly interested in HUGE highly integrated system on chip devices and already have much more significantly advanced Process technology than VLSI. VLSI seems to be best at creating mainstream (about .25u) assp's / chip sets.
