Deer, elk, bear, marten, mink, weasels, bobcat -- all more common now than 100 years ago. Licensed hunters and trappers pay for wildlife management with their license fees and through taxes on their equipment. They put their money where their mouth is. That's more than I can say for the people who dress up in bunny suits and try to interfere with people in legal pursuit of the hunt. THAT's the kind of interference I resent.
Regarding wolves, there are lots of them here. The people who wanted to reduce their numbers were subsistence hunters, mostly natives. There are lots of caribou too, and the Alyeska pipeline did not cause dire straights as predicted by chicken littles. Also, the chicken littles did not refrain from driving their cars enough to reduce the demand for oil and thus put the pipeline out of business, so it's their fault anyway.
As for whales, the National Park Service thinks it is protecting them by restricting boat speed in Glacier Bay, but the place where I see them most is out by the ferry terminal and Auke Bay Harbor with thousands of boats, and at North Shelter Pass which is the best place to catch salmon and halibut. The salmon and halibut are after herring, and that of course is why the whales are there. The hundreds of unrestricted-speed fishing boats do not disturb them at all.
The point of all this: freedom is to be coveted and prized above rubies. People like Slick Willie and Mrs. Slick think they can solve the Littleton matter by depriving people of their constitutional rights. It makes them feel good and keeps people from thinking about Monica's non-best-seller and the fact that Slick deals in black market Cuban cigars.
You see, in order to be free you have to do your own thinking. Slick Willie doesn't want you to do that. He doesn't even think you know how to spend a tax cut properly, so he's going to do it for you. Which by the way he has a good start on in his nasty little war for the hearts and minds of the Kosovars.
By the way, do you believe in catch and torture fly fishing or catch and eat? |
