The many gun related death in the US are the result of a high criminality rate coupled with a constitutionally protected right to have access to guns.

True, we could and should limit those deaths with laws that make access to guns, and especially military style guns, difficult. Eliminating the right to bear arms altogether would be a mistake however. (The Kosovars will agree .)

What we need most is to work at reducing criminal behavior and violence in our society.

There, I believe in :

1. emphasizing the role of parents and schools in making sure kids respect the laws (and be taught about the importance of getting involved in making those laws when they are adults)

2. very tough laws for "small" crimes.

That the situation would improve with more involvment of parents and schools in instilling a sense of civic duty in kids is obvious.

Tough laws for small crime would help because there usually is a progression in criminal behavior : one is almost always a young criminal before becoming a murderer. Very tough laws on larceny, drug use, vandalism etc...tend to deter young people from getting in trouble, and are effective in all countries where they exist.

All the above may sounds old fashioned, un-fun, and un-cool, or even bordering fascism for some, but it works. England has (or used to have) an extremely law criminality rate because they are (were) a civic- minded society.
