Home - Yahoo! - Help China Tel subscribers up 52 pct in 1998 Wednesday April 28, 2:52 am Eastern Time HONG KONG, April 28 (Reuters) - China Telecom (Hong Kong) Ltd said on Wednesday its subscriber base had grown by 52.42 percent in 1998 to 6.53 million at the end of the year. The company, which added 2.25 million subscribers in China's Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, said the total minutes of usage in 1998 grew 42.05 percent to 25 billion minutes. China Telecom said the overall penetration rate of cellular telephones in China remained relatively low at two percent. The cellular services provider reported on Wednesday 1998 net profit of 6.9 billion yuan. Analysts' forecasts for the period ranged from 6.5 billion to 7.3 billion yuan.
